Like the rest of Portugal, Centro is famous for its healing waters and the small thermal spa town of Luso is no exception. The accommodation here is sumptuous colonial style and you can even stay in the former Royal summer residence at the Palace Hotel Bussaco in the heart of the Bussaco Forest. Luso is three kilometres downhill from Bucaco and only an hour's walk away. It has been a known as a spa town for over a hundred years and is still popular with the locals who take the water to alleviate rheumatism and liver disorders. The spa specialises in treating arterial disease in the elderly.

Other spa towns in the Centro area are Curia, Monfortinho and São Pedro do Sul. It is believed that the first king of Portugal, Dom Afonso Henriques bathed in São Pedro do Sul, seeking to gather all his strength before trying to recover of Portugal from the Moors. You, too, can opt for relaxation and regeneration with a stay at São Pedro do Sul - hopefully there won’t be any bloody struggles afterwards…
