Castelo Branco sits amongst some of Portugal's best olive groves and produces some of its best olive oil. But this Portuguese town is most famous for its connection to the Order of the Templar Knights. In 1214 it was entrusted to them so that they would protect and defend it and in return they were permitted to use it for their own purposes. It is of strategic importance as it is so close to the border of Spain and thus has been attacked and partially destroyed many times over the centuries and through various different wars. The Templars built the walls and the castle that have been restored many times and stand proud over looking the town.

It has a focus on the textile industry that dates back from the 19th century and prevails to this day, and as many upper class people move there in the same century, some beautiful old residences still stand. It is also an important industrial centre.
A walk up the hill from the town towards the castle is a great way to spend the afternoon. Marvell at the fortified walls and imagine all the battles that once played out there. There are some magnificent views of the olive groves that surround the area. Castelo Branco is also home to the stunning Jardim do Paço Episcopal, Garden of the Episcopal Palace, which is one of the best baroque gardens in Portugal.
